Although 74 cities in China adopted the new strict air quality standards in 2013, only three out of 74 cities’ air quality is up to standard. As far as the good air quality days are concerned, these 74 cities hit the benchmark on average 221 days out of 364.Here is a look at 10 Chinese cities with best air quality under the new standard, according to vice-minister of the Environmental Protection Wu Xiaoqing at a news conference at the two sessions.
1. Haikou
Haikou is the capital and most populous city of Hainan province in China. It is situated on the northern coast of Hainan, by the mouth of the Nandu River. The northern part of the city is the district of Haidian Island, which is separated from the main part of Haikou by Haidian River, a branch of Nandu.
2. Zhoushan
Zhoushan, formerly transliterated as Chusan, is a city in northeastern Zhejiang province of Eastern China. One of the two cities of China consisting solely of islands, it lies across the mouth of the Hangzhou Bay, and is separated from the mainland by a narrow body of water. On July 8, 2011, the central government approved Zhoushan's as Zhoushan Archipelago New Area, a state-level new area.
3. Lhasa
Lhasa is the administrative capital of Tibet. It is the second most populous city on the Tibetan Plateau after Xining and, at an altitude of 3,490 metres, it is one of the highest cities in the world. The city contains many cultural treasures, such as the Potala Palace, Jokhang temple and Norbulingka palaces, many of which are located in Chengguan District, the city seat.
4. Fuzhou
Fuzhou is the capital and one of the largest cities in Fujian province, China. Along with the many counties of Ningde, those of Fuzhou are considered to constitute the Mindong linguistic and cultural area.
5. Huizhou
Huizhou is a city located in central Guangdong province of China. Part of the Pearl River Delta, Huizhou borders the provincial capital of Guangzhou to the west, Shaoguan to the north, Heyuan to the northeast, Shanwei to the east, Shenzhen and Dongguan to the southwest, and looks out to Daya Bay on the South China Sea to the south.
6. Zhuhai
Zhuhai is a city on the southern coast of Guangdong province in China. Located in the Pearl River Delta, Zhuhai borders Jiangmen to the northwest, Zhongshan to the north, and Macau to the south. Zhuhai is also one of China's premier tourist destinations, being called the Chinese Riviera.
7. Shenzhen
Shenzhen is a major city in the south of Southern China's Guangdong Province, situated immediately north of Hong Kong.
8. Xiamen
Xiamen is a major city on the southeast coast of China. The city's urban area includes the old urban island area and covers all six districts of Xiamen. It also borders Quanzhou to the north and Zhangzhou making this a unique built up area of more than five million people.
9. Lishui
Lishui is a city in the southwest of Zhejiang province, China. It borders Quzhou, Jinhua and Taizhou to the north, Wenzhou to the southeast, and the province of Fujian to the southwest. The name of the city literally means "Beautiful Water".
10. Guiyang
Guiyang is the capital of Guizhou province of Southwest China. It is located in the centre of the province, situated on the east of the Yunnan–Guizhou Plateau, and on the north bank of the Nanming River, a branch of the Wu River. The city has an elevation of about 1,100 meters.
