In close proximity to the north of Hong Kong, Shenzhen is a city of sub-provincial administrative status in the southern province of Guangdong. The Most Competitive City in Guangdong Internet Industry
SHENZHEN has been ranked the most competitive city in Guangdong Province in Internet-related industries. Shenzhen is followed by Guangzhou, Foshan, Dongguan and Zhuhai, the Nanfang Daily reported.
The ranking was compiled based on 2015 data released jointly by the Guangdong Internet Information Office and the Guangdong Internet Association on Wednesday.
E-commerce Industry
The report looked at 15 industries, including e-commerce. It said the e-commerce industry in Guangdong was more active than the national average in 2015. According to the report, 56 percent of people in the province shop online.
Data showed that as of 2015 Guangdong had 18 e-commerce businesses whose sales exceeded 5 billion yuan (US$769 million), and 32 e-commerce websites whose yearly transaction volume reached over 50 million yuan.
Online Games
The report showed revenue from online games in China made up around 23 percent of global revenue. And Guangdong contributed up to 70 percent to the national revenue. In 2015, sales by Guangdong-based game companies surpassed 10 billion yuan. Two game companies in the province were in the top 10 earners globally.
CEO of iiMedia Data Corp., Zhang Yi, said domestic manufacturers of game machines gathered in Guangdong. They contributed 9.5 billion yuan in revenue, making up 98.2 percent of the national market. Zhang's firm was one of the partners responsible for the report. Zhang said that in 2015 traditional game companies were focusing on mobile games, which made the industry even more competitive. "Intellectual property and cross-industry hardware sales will be two of the industries' most profitable fields in the future," he said.
Internet-based Food Sales
Statistics showed that Internet-based food sales had improved. Transaction rose from 9.2 billion yuan in 2010 to 94.6 billion yuan four years later. In 2015 the numbers of users in this industry may have exceeded 200 million.
Guangdong is also one of the first provinces to promote big data apps. In 2013, 2014 and 2015, the province's information technology and big data industry made up around 7.85, 8.26 and 10.29 percent, respectively, of Guangdong's GDP.
