The giveaways came on the same day Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu launched the HK$2 billion "Hello Hong Kong" promotion campaign on Feb 2ed. 2023, during which he declared the 500,000 free tickets to tourists.
The authority bought these tickets, worth more than HK$2 billion, in April 2020 to help airlines get through the pandemic and to use them to attract tourists once the city reopens.It gave away 60,000 free air tickets in vaccination lucky draws in 2021.
These 500,000 free airline tickets will be distributed by Hong Kong Express, Cathay Pacific, and Hong Kong Airlines start from March 1. to travellers from all around the globe. The $2 billion campaign which is "probably the world's biggest welcome ever " aims to promotes the return of Hong Kong to the world stage as it bounces back from its lull during the pandemic, hoping to boost Hong Kong’s tourism and business industries while attracting foreign investors.
Over the course of six months, Flagship carrier Cathay Pacific, HK Express, and Hong Kong Airlines will distribute the half-million free air tickets through a lottery system and two-for-one purchases.
Starting with Southeast Asian countries, followed by mainland China and Northeastern Asia. Later this summer, an additional 80,000 free airline tickets will be distributed to Hong Kong residents with another 80,000 for those living in the Greater Bay Area.
Cathay said round-trip tickets will be distributed in phases from March 1 and will begin with southeast Asia, followed by the mainland in April, and from May to tourists from northeast Asia and other medium and long-haul markets.
Cathay has not revealed details on how to win free tickets but called on people to register to become a member of the airline and receive reminders on how to join the campaign.
HK Express said it will be giving out tickets in phases from April. Hong Kong Airlines said ticket reservations for the free economy-class round-trip tickets will begin on March 1 for southeast Asians first, followed by those from the mainland and northeast Asian markets like Japan and South Korea. And tickets for Hongkongers will be launched in the third quarter this year.
The ‘Hello Hong Kong’ campaign will include sporting and outdoor events such as the Hong Kong Marathon, the Hong Kong Sevens rugby tournament and the 100-kilometre Trailwalker. Other cultural events will also be back this year including Clockenflap music festival, the Art Basel, the Museum Summit and the Hong Kong Arts Festival, as well as MICE events, top trade shows, exhibitions and competitions such as the International Jewellery Show, the WOW Summit and the Vis East Moot, among others.
The Tourism Board will also be giving away at least one million tourist consumption vouchers, worth over HK$100 (US$12.80) each which can be used on drinks, food, shopping or transport.The vouchers will cover welcome drinks at some bars, restaurants and hotels, as well as cash vouchers for tourists to redeem in transportation, culinary, retail and tourist attractions.Tourists can get them from four Tourism Board visitor centers at the airport, the high-speed rail station, Star Ferry concourse, and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge Hong Kong Port.
