Shenzhen Financial Industry
The number of banks and securities and insurance firms, and the ratio of their employees to the total population in Shenzhen are among the top three cities in China. In 2010, total assets of financial firms reached 4.24 trillion yuan, realizing added value of 127.93 billion yuan and comprising 13.5 percent of the city's GDP.
The municipal government pledges to offer preferential policies, optimal environment and best services to local finance organizations. The 8th Global Financial Centers Index, published by the City of London in September 2010, placed Shenzhen 14th.
Shenzhen Banking
By the end of 2010, Shenzhen had 83 banks, 19 with legal person status. Their total assets reached 3.4854 trillion yuan, up 26.13 percent from the previous year. Savings deposits in 2010 reached 2.1938 trillion yuan, up 19.5 percent over the previous year. Loans reached 1.6808 trillion yuan, up 13.7 percent over the previous year. Their total after-tax profits amounted to 41.16 billion yuan, up 39.63 percent over the previous year.
Shenzhen Securities Industry
One of the centers of China's securities markets, Shenzhen is home to the Shenzhen Stock Exchange (SSE). The Small and Medium Enterprises Board (SME Board) was launched in 2004 and the NASDAQ-style growth board ChiNext was launched in 2009. In 2010, the SSE saw 321 new listings, more than any other stock exchanges in the world. By the end of 2010, 1,169 firms were listed at the SSE, including 531 on the SME board and 153 on the growth board. Total market capitalization reached 8.64 trillion yuan, up 45.77 from the beginning of the year.
Shenzhen has 17 securities companies. Their total assets reach 460.2 billion yuan. It is also home to 16 mutual fund companies, managing 811.7 billion yuan in assets which account for one-third of the country's total.
Shenzhen Insurance
In 2010, Shenzhen insurance firms saw their capital increase rapidly, and foreign insurance firms in Shenzhen also saw robust growth. In March 2010, the Shenzhen Municipal Government signed a memorandum with China Insurance Regulatory Commission, according to which Shenzhen would initiate reforms in the insurance industry.
So far, 12 insurance firms have established headquarters in Shenzhen. There are 47 branches of insurance firms and 145 insurance agencies in the city. The total assets of the insurance firms reached 7.45 billion yuan in 2010, up 36.92 percent from the previous year. Shenzhen firms handled 42 percent of the insurance appraisals, with the nation's top four insurance appraisal firms all located here.
By the end of 2010, there were four locally incorporated foreign insurance institutions, 7 branches of foreign insurance firms and 6 foreign insurance sales agencies in Shenzhen.
Shenzhen Foreign Financial Institutions
The Shenzhen branch of Nanyang Commercial Bank opened in January 1982, marking the first re-entry of foreign banks into the Chinese mainland market since 1949. The city now has 33 foreign banks, including four locally incorporated institutions, 24 branches and five representative offices.
