ATAHK reads from Xinhua News that Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak stressed on Tuesday that levying consumption tax won’t increase the burden of people. For details, please refer to the following news from Xinhua News on September 4th:
He made the remarks against the background of widespread protest activities on the issue.
Najib recently announced that a 6-percent Goods and Services Tax (GST) will be implemented from April 1, 2015, replacing the sales tax and service tax.
Consumption tax is a progressive tax policy, which has been successfully implemented in more than 90 percent of the countries in the world and its purpose is not to increase the people's burden, he added.
The Malaysia government will also take duty free policy of daily life into consideration, under the premise that no national revenue would be affected, said Najib.
He said that there are just over a million taxpayers in a country with a population of 28 million. The revenue from the GST will not only contribute to national economic development, but also enable the government to build more infrastructures in both urban and rural areas, and improve people ' s living quality.
Najib acknowledged that the government will make more comprehensive briefing and explanation about GST.
