The Ancient Town Foshan has an abundant and multifarious traditional culture, like the Ancient Nanfeng Kiln, Foshan Ancient Temple， Liang’s Garden, Tongji Bridge, Donghuali etc. cultural heritages. All these memorize the culture and folk-custom in this southern city perfectly.
Foshan was built in Jun Dynasty and given name in Tang Dynasty and it’s one of the national historical and cultural city. On Tang Zhenguan Year 2 for 3 josses had been found at Tapo and here have been thought to be a land of Buddhists so given name of Foshan.
Situated in Dongping riverside of Ancient Shiwan Town, Guangdong, Ancient Nanfeng Kiln was built up in Zhnegde Period of Ming Dynasty (A.D. 1506-1521), it has been continuously firing until now. Nanfeng Kiln is facing south so she had got a name Nanfeng Kiln.
It’s said that the Foshan Ancient Temple which reflect Foshan’s religion culture was built during Beisong Yuanfeng Year. This is a temple offering the Beifang Xuantian Dadi of Taoism that called “ Beidi Temple”. The original building was destroyed by fire in the Yuan Dynasty and the temple was reconstructed in the early Ming Dynasty Hongwu five years (1372). Because of “long history and it is the first temple for the various”, the temple called “Zumiao”.
As one of the four famous gardens in Qing Dynasty with the other three Yumeng Chanfang in Panyu, Ke Garden in Dongguan, Qinghui Garden in Shunde, Liang’s Garden is a typical representative for Lingnan literatis’ gardens in Qing Dynasty.
Donghuali located in Lingnan Foshan Fuxian Road reflects the distinct characteristics of residential areas. This is nor a long alley and there are much narrow alleys on both sides of the alley. Inside the alleys there are big houses being built in Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China, and most of them is Wo’er House. This is the most complete existing typical Lingnan style of residential architecture building group during that period in Foshan. The mode of houses in the street remained in the Qing Dynasty, it is a good place to study the history of Foshan locality history, architecture history and living practices.
There is a saying that “walks through the Tongji Bridge, all things well” and the Tongji Bridge exactly located in Foshan. The Foshan government had rebuilt the Tongji Bredge and so many people came and followed the tradition in lantern festival. The government had set up a collection box beside and has had thousands of donation every year.
In 1994, Foshan was denominated by the State Department as the National Historical and Cultural City since there are numerous of ancient trace and culture inheritance in good condition.
Foshan has got many laurels after ages effort, such as National Hygienic City, National Garden City, Nation Clean City, National Historical and Cultural City, Excellence Travel City and the Model City for Advocacy of Army and People. Foshan is one of the antique cities in Lingnan, which attracts foreign visitors.
