In a world of increasing complex data, GS1 System of Standards help companies single out what really matters to them. They provide a common language to identify, capture and share supply chain data, to ensure important information is accessible, accurate and easy to understand.

Identify
GS1 Identification Keys are used to uniquely distinguish trade items (e.g. by GTIN), logistic units (e.g. by SSCC), locations (e.g. by GLN) and assets (e.g. by GRAI) throughout the supply chain.
GS1 Identification Keys
The underpinning foundation of the GS1 System of Standards is the provision of a unique number that can be used internationally for identification throughout the supply chain. This number is known as a GS1 Identification Key.
These GS1 Identification Keys can be put together to identify everything in a supply chain.

Capture
GS1 barcodes (including GS1 EAN/UPC, GS1-128, ITF-14, GS1 DataBar, GS1 DataMatrix, GS1 QR Code etc.) and EPC-enabled Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags carry information, including GS1 Identification Keys, about products and locations. They can also include additional information such as product batch/lot number, expiry dates etc for food traceability and safety.
GS1 standards for barcodes and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags
GS1 data capture standards currently include definitions of barcodes and RFID data carriers which allow GS1 Identification Keys and supplementary data to be affixed directly to a physical object, and standards that specify consistent interfaces to readers, printers, and other hardware and software components that connect the data carriers to business applications.

Share
Interoperability, made possible by identification standards, data capture standards and interface standards for electronic communication, allows seamless product and information flow throughout the supply chain.
GS1 standards for data exchange
GS1 standards for information sharing include data standards for master data, business transaction data, and physical event data, as well as communication standards for sharing such data between applications and trading partners. Other information sharing standards include discovery standards that help locate where relevant data resides across a supply chain and trust standards that help establish the conditions for sharing data with adequate security.
