Chengdu weather is mild and humid all year round, featuring four clear-cut seasons – long and warm spring, short and sultry summer, cool and rainy autumn, cold and foggy winter.
The distinctive characteristic of Chengdu weather is fog and humidity. There are fewer hours of sunlight per day, and the summer is hotter and the winter is colder than the temperature shows. The rainy season is usually in July and August, with occasional storms. Thus, the best time to pay a visit is March to June and September to November.
Introduction to Chengdu Climate
The subtropical monsoon climate influenced by the Sichuan Basin brings the annual average temperature in Chengdu to about 16 C (61 F). The hottest time is July and August, with the highest temperature reaching 37 C (99 F). The coldest month is January, with its lowest temperature dropping to -6 C (21 F).
Spring
Spring in Chengdu often comes early from the end of February and lasts long until early May. As the temperature rises, colorful flowers are blooming one after another, and trees and grass are turning green under the spring wind. It’s the best time to see the peach blossom at Longquan Mountain, the pear blossom at Xinjin County, the peony at Danjing Mountain, and the cuckoo at Wawu Mountain. There is a flower fair held at Qingyang Temple on 25th of January in the Chinese lunar calendar every year. Take a thin sweater, a long-sleeved T-shirts and a jacket with you to visit the city at this time.
Summer
Summer here is both hot and rainy, from mid-May to early the end of August. Besides shorts, a thin overcoat and rain gear are also necessary for a summer tour to the trip. At this time, the area is somewhat unpleasant because of the high humidity although the temperature is usually less than 35 C (95 F). Qincheng Mountain, Four Maiden's Mountain and Jiulong Valley are ideal places close to the city for escaping the summer heat.
Autumn
Autumn usually starts from September and lasts till the end of October or early November. The temperature drops quickly, and there may be a lot of rain. You’d better take long-sleeved T-shirts and thin overcoats plus a thin sweater. Kalong Valley, Sanjiang and Miyaluo at this time are covered with red maple and yellow chrysanthemum, beautiful and magnificent. Jiuzhaigou also comes to its fairest season of the year.
Winter
The average temperature in winter from November to mid-February is about 5 C (41 F). However, due to the clouds and moist weather, it feels very cold. You have to wear woollens, down jackets and warm winter boots to spend a winter holiday there. Xiling Snow Mountain and Longchi National Forest Park are good places for skiing, while the plum blossom in Tazishan Park and Meilin Park is also attractive.
